In the study, researchers asked about 2,000 people with type 2 diabetes who took a dummy pill that they were taking for an additional 2 years. After the dummy pill was taken, they were asked to report whether they had weight loss at least 5 percent of their initial body weight. If they answered yes, they were asked to take the drug X, and if they answered no, they were asked to take a placebo pill. People who took a drug for a year got a loss of about 2.2 pounds over the 2 years.
The researchers also asked people to report whether they had ever had an MRI, a blood test, or other medical study. They did so before they tried the drugs, but they didn’t ask if they’d have a blood test, but they did ask about the MRI, which was performed three years later.
“I think there was a small group of people who were really good candidates for weight loss drugs,” Gepin said.
Gepin said that the study’s results are important because they suggest people who took a drug with a “small” weight loss risk could actually benefit from using them. If they are able to do that, they could actually lose weight, he said.
Gepin said that the drug that is most often prescribed to people with type 2 diabetes is called.
“If you were to take the drug, you could be at a very high risk of diabetes and you could get diabetes,” Gepin said. “That’s what the data suggest.”
The drugs work by blocking fat absorption in the intestines, which are located in the stomach, and can make people more likely to develop diabetes.
